About Bancroft and Area

logoWelcome to Bancroft, the "Mineral Capital of Canada". Situated on the Canadian shield, Bancroft is ideally positioned about 2.5 hours west of Ottawa and 2.5 hours northeast of Toronto. As well, we are 3 hours from North Bay, the Near North, and 3 hours from Gananoque and the US border.

Bancroft is a picturesque community with the York River flowing through the center of town. Bancroft is the hub of the North Hastings area. We have everything from live theatre at the Village Playhouse, rock hounding at the annual Rock Hound Gemboree, cottaging and fishing at numerous area lakes, or snowmobiling in the winter on the well maintained trail system. Visit one of the local "sugar bush" camps in the spring to see maple syrup being made. For outdoor enthusiasts, the area offers great hiking and nature walk trails. The York River Millennium Bandshell, a venue for outdoor concerts and theatre, is home to the Mineral Capital Concert series from mid-June to the end of August.

Juno Winner, Leela Gilday Autumn in the Bancroft area is a spectacular sight. The foliage turns to golds and reds around the area. A day trip north to Algonquin Provincial Park is well worth it to experience the fall colours. The local artisans hold their annual Bancroft & Area Fall Studio Tour for all to enjoy. For hunters, the Bancroft area offers game from partridge to deer and moose, and in 2001, elk were reintroduced into the region.

The Rally of the Tall Pines in November is a world class event for car racing enthusiasts. Think Snow in February is a fun weekend for the whole family. There are sled dog races running through town, an outdoor ice oval, as well as numerous arts and craft exhibits. Snowmobilers, ATV riders, and hikers can all enjoy the Hastings Heritage Trail system that was originally the I.B.& O. railroad.

What Is A B.I.A.?

Flint Parking Lot A BIA is a geographic area in a municipality. Each BIA has a board of management which is an organization set up to provide business promotion and improvement functions.
A BIA allows local business people and property owners to join together and with the support of the municipality, organize, finance and carry out physical improvement and promote economic development in their district. The local municipality is the body responsible for approving the budget of the BIA.

The BIA has a two fold mandate:
• to oversee the improvement, beautification and maintenance of municipally owned land, buildings and structures in the area beyond that provided by the municipality generally, and
• to promote the area as a business and shopping district.
